La cantante británica Amy Winehouse, de 27 años, ha sido encontrada muerta en su casa de Londres, en el barrio de Camden. La intérprete de soul tenía un largo historial de problemas con el alcohol y las drogas.

Hace unos meses salió de una cura de desintoxicación, justo antes de intentar realizar una gira de conciertos veraniegos que tuvo que anular. En su último recital, en Belgrado, fue abucheada por el público al no poder, prácticamente, mantener el equilibrio ni entonar sus canciones.

La policía dijo que halló el cuerpo de una mujer de 27 años en un apartamento en Camden Square, en el norte de Londres, después de que los servicios de emergencias recibieran una llamada a las 16.05 horas (17.05 hora peninsular española). "Las investigaciones continúan para averiguar las circunstancias de la muerte. Se está tratando como un caso sin explicación", ha asegurado un portavoz de la policía. Los agentes han acordonado la casa para evitar el paso de los fotógrafos.

El padre de Winehouse, que se encuentra en Nueva York, regresará de inmediato a Londres, informa la cadena británica BBC. La cantante había hecho su última aparición pública el miércoles por la noche, cuando salió al escenario junto a su ahijada Dionne Bromfield en el teatro 'The Roundhouse' de Camden Town. A Winehouse se la vio bailar con Bromfield en el escenario mientras animaba a la audiencia a comprar su último álbum.

Winehouse, que empezó a despuntar en febrero de 2007 en unos Brit Awards en los que hizo sombra a Lily Allen, le arrebató el premio como mejor artista femenina, alcanzó el estrellato con su 'single 'Rehab'.

Amy Winehouse nació en Londres el 14 de septiembre de 1983. Fue descubierta por el cantante Tyler James a la edad de 16 años. Debutó con un disco, 'Frank', en 2003, que recibió buenas críticas. Su segundo álbum, 'Back to Black', se publicó en octubre de 2006. El 'single' 'Rehab' contiene la frase: "They tried to make me go to rehab. I said 'no, no, no'" ("Ellos intentaron llevarme a desintoxicación. Yo dije no, no, no").

Tras conocerse la noticia, varias figuras del mundo de la música y los medios de comunicación expresaron su sorpresa y pesar por la desaparición de la estrella. El DJ Fearne Cotton ha admitido a través de Twitter que no podía creer la muerte de Winehouse y calificó a la cantante de "chica especial. Es la noticia más triste". Mientras, la cantante Myleene Klasse afirmó que la artista tenía un "talento excepcional y era una chica realmente agradable".

"Acabo de escuchar la triste noticia de la muerte de Amy Winehouse. Con tan sólo 27 años, es una terrible pérdida de gran talento. Envío mis más sinceras condolencias a la familia", ha afirmado el presentador de música Phillip Schofield.

Amy Winehouse, the Grammy Award-winning pop singer-songwriter whose sultry and profane compositions reflected — and ultimately were overshadowed by — a turbulent personal life and struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction, was found dead Saturday at her apartment in London. She was 27.

Police sources confirmed her death, but the cause was not immediately available.

The British-born performer's train-wreck-style public behavior often threatened to eclipse her talent. Although she received high-profile engagements, such as Nelson Mandela's 90th-birthday concert at London's Hyde Park in 2008, she routinely canceled or missed engagements, whether from bad health or bad manners.

In June, Ms. Winehouse canceled a tour when she shouted "Hello, Athens!" to an audience of 20, 000 in the Serbian capital of Belgrade. She appeared to be so inebriated that backup singers had to sing her songs when she proved incapable. She was ultimately booed off the stage.

Ms. Winehouse often said living dangerously generated her creativity, and she was often photographed half-dressed, wild-eyed and disheveled. The English tabloids reported she had suffered brain damage from excessive use of drugs and alcohol.

"It sounds like such a wank thing to say, " Ms. Winehouse once said, "but I need to get some headaches goin' to write about."

Her reckless life often called to mind the doomed pop stars of earlier generations, including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain — all of whom also died at the age of 27.

She had a fondness for jazz-inflected vocals and 1960s pop, but she roughed up the style to include hip-hop slang and an infusion of profanity. Her music often focused on drinking, drug-taking and chronic infidelity.

Her song "Rehab" mirrored her life through its defiant lyrics: "They tried to make me go to rehab / I said no, no, no." The bouncy song, styled after the early Motown sound and 1960s girl groups, became a ubiquitous hit in 2007.

Amid the chaos and turmoil of her personal life, Ms. Winehouse won five Grammy Awards in 2008, including best new artist. She also won for song of the year and best female pop vocal performance for "Rehab, " as well as record of the year and best pop vocal album for her CD "Back to Black."

Music critic Chuck Arnold wrote of "Back to Black" in People magazine that Ms. Winehouse "turns a righteous girl-group groove into a rebellious bad-girl anthem, as if Courtney Love has crashed Martha and the Vandellas."

She was supported by a first-rate production team in her recordings, but she did not always appear first-rate in live performance.

New York Times music reviewer Jon Pareles wrote of her May 2007 appearance at Manhattan's Highline Ballroom, "Her voice glints with possibility: tart, smoky, ready to flirt or sob, and capable of the jazzy timing of a Dinah Washington or the declamation of soul singers like Martha Reeves and Carla Thomas.

"What she doesn't have, and may not want, is the kind of focus the older singers brought to their songs, " he wrote, adding that her performance "switched between confession and indifference."
